Ecclesiastes and the Search for Meaning, Led by Elder Aaron Renenger and Jeremy Root, Chapel
Join us as we engage in a study of Ecclesiastes—a book of profound contemporary relevance. Life under the sun is difficult and can at times feel devoid of meaning. We may seek satisfaction in pleasure, in work, in wisdom, in money, and in people only to find that—apart from God—everything seems futile and meaningless. Ecclesiastes presents an honest reckoning with some of life’s biggest questions—What is the meaning of life? Why is there suffering and injustice? How should we live in the face of certain death?—and ultimately points the way to a right relationship with God.
Between the Testaments, Led by Elder Gary McGee, Room 303
This class will focus on the 500 year period “Between the Testaments.” We will concentrate on the political and economic changes that occurred and which formed the crucible of the period in which Jesus lived. We will begin with the return from the Babylonian exile and wrap up with the final great diaspora that followed the complete destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Our exploration will begin with background on the geography, topography and climate of the Holy Land that made this land inviting to both settlers and invaders. From there we will look at the return from exile, the exploits of Alexander the Great, the struggle between the Ptolemies and the Seleucid, the Maccabean uprising and Hasmonean Dynasty, the Roman conquest, the establishment of King Herod and successors, the revolts against Rome and the destruction of Jerusalem. Along the way, we will learn how the Jewish people lived in first century Palestine and what eventually became of them.
All Sunday evening activities will be held from 5-7pm at 2405 Russell Road.
Sign-ups are required. To sign-up, please contact the course’s point of contact listed below, and indicate if you will need childcare.
