He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’” Joshua 4:21-22
In the mid 1980s, the Lord brought together a group of men and women to begin the work of planting a reformed church in Old Town Alexandria. The vision of having a PCA church in the heart of Alexandria had been long seared on the hearts of Bob and Rosemary Morrison. Their vision was united with that of veteran church planters, Pastor Bob Schoof and his wife, Barbara.
With this core, a handful of believers began worshipping together on May 11, 1986 at Campagna Center, with a commitment to reformed teaching and a personal and vibrant worship. As God brought more individuals, couples and families into the fellowship, everyone’s spiritual gifts were discovered and exercised. On April 24, 1988, the body of believers was formed into a particular church in the Potomac Presbytery of the PCA. The Ruling Elders installed were Ben Crowley, Robert E. Morrison, Jim Stanford, and Jim Taft.
God used this special time in the life of the congregation to strengthen the souls of the believers, to insist that the Session actively lead the congregation, to coalesce the commitment of the congregation to this particular ministry, and to develop a shared passion and vision.
Reverend Schoof resigned as pastor on October 15, 1990, and a new era began with the arrival of Tom and Sharon Holliday, and their children, Tommy, Stacey and Caitlin. Reverend Holliday was installed as pastor on November 1, 1990. During this unique period God forged APC's hallmark unity, with a vision to be a vibrant, praying and caring church.
Shortly after, the church facility of the Community Praise Center — which had been sought on a number of prior occasions — providentially became available and the church began to worship at our first Russell Road location.
In June of 1997, God opened the door for APC to move into Del Ray Baptist Church at 2405 Russell Road. We are grateful for the Lord's provision of a great relationship between our churches as we worship together in this wonderful church building. This partnership is a testimony to how the Body of Christ can work in unity. Learn More About Sharing Christ with Del Ray Baptist Church.
The Lord has also seen fit to bless both churches with growing congregations, stretching the capacity of the Russell Road campus. So, in September 2016, APC began a second worship service at our West Braddock Road Campus (WBRC) at 1302 W. Braddock Road.
The WBRC is the former home of Alexandria Bible Church, founded in 1828. In 2015, the congregation of ABC sold their property to APC and many of their members joined our church.
Despite worshipping at two times in two locations, we are one church family. The same pastor preaches the same sermon at both services. We have one board of elders, one board of deacons. We attend the same Covenant Fellowship Groups, social events, and Sunday night programs for adults, youth, and children.
Notable traditions of the church include: APC fellowship dinners; in-home Covenant Fellowship groups; our Easter Sunrise Service at Market Square in Old Town; a Fall picnic; our Thanksgiving Service of sharing, praise and thankfulness; our Christmas Candlelight Service; quarterly Sunday School classes for children, youth and adults; Vacation Bible School; our Explorers children’s program; a dynamic youth ministry called PROTAS; Sonship training; and co-ed softball teams; and vibrant music in worship.
